Film professor awarded for “Swirl for a Girl”

David ReissDave Reiss, an assistant professor in the Department of Electronic Media & Film at Towson University, won the Best of Competition in the Promotional Faculty Video category of the 2013 Broadcast Education Association Festival of Media Arts.

Reiss’ film, “Swirl for a Girl,” is a short documentary about Carman Lay, a 7-year-old Maryland School for the Blind student who has achieved what her doctors originally deemed impossible. Carman’s inspirational story is told by her parents and teachers as well as archival footage and photographs.

An award-winning filmmaker and editor, Reiss’ projects have ranged from commercials to long form documentaries for National Geographic, Discovery Channel, Newseum and Maryland Public Television, among many others. At Towson, he teaches video production courses in Narrative, Documentary, Corporate and Community Service Learning. He also serves as the internship coordinator of the EMF department and the general manager of the student-run television station, WMJF-TV.
