Towson’s annual WAMMFest honors women and minorities in media

Towson University invites community members to celebrate women and minorities working in television, radio and film with the sixth annual Women and Minorities in Media Festival (WAMMFest) beginning Monday, April 8.

Kelcey Edwards

Award-winning documentary film producer Kelcey Edwards is this year’s guest artist.

Sponsored by the Department of Electronic Media and Film and free and open to the public, the festival offers six days of video screenings and master classes led by award-winning filmmaker, Kelcey Edwards.

In its opening event, WAMMFest will feature audio and video works solicited from media professionals and students of regional and international middle and high schools, colleges and universities. All works reference women or minorities as their main subject or have been created with a woman or minority in a key creative role. Screenings of the best professional and student submissions will take place from Monday, April 8 to Wednesday, April 10.

This year, WAMMFest welcomes guest artist Kelcey Edwards, a documentary filmmaker whose work has screened at such festivals as True/False, SilverDocs and the South by Southwest Film Festival.

After receiving an MFA in documentary film and video from Stanford University, she moved to New York City to work as a filmmaker, producer and arts educator. Since then she has produced several films, including Words of Witness, a documentary feature directed by Mai Iskander about the recent revolution in Egypt.

Edwards will screen her documentary, Wonder Women! The Untold Stories of American Superheroines, on Saturday, April 13. Discussion and a Q&A session with the producer will follow the screening.
