Theatre students to perform once-banned “Spring Awakening”

Spring AwakeningThe Towson University Department of Theatre Arts will bring Spring Awakening, the rock musical based on the once banned and still provocative Frank Wedekind play, to the stage beginning Thursday, April 25.

The winner of eight Tony Awards including Best Musical, this modern rendition is an adaptation of the 1891 play, with music by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater. The haunting musical explores the lives of a group of late 19th-century German students as they journey to navigate self-discovery while celebrating youth and rebellion.

Directed by Joseph Ritsch, the Towson University performance is intended for mature audiences only, due to its explicit language and adult subject matter.

The cast includes students Brandon Scott Boyd, Nick Fruit, Bridget Linsenmyer, Montel Butler, Shannon Graham, Ines Nassara, Peyton Lynch, Taylor Rieland, Allison Bradbury, Nia Smith, Christopher Fotis and James Ruth.

The production crew includes Joseph Ritsch, director and choreographer; Cedric D. Lyles, musical director; Daniel Ettinger, set design; Jay Herzog, lighting design; Julie Heneghan, costume design; Lian O’ Hanlon, sound design; Sean Bargatze, production dramaturgy; and Anthony Rosas, technical director.

Spring Awakening opens on Thursday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for the Arts Mainstage Theatre. Subsequent performances will run through May 11.
