Three Towson University football standouts from this year’s Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship team will get a chance to chase their NFL dreams this season. Defensive end Frank Beltre, safety Jordan Dangerfield and wide receiver Gerrard Sheppard each signed rookie free agent contracts last week.

“We are very proud that these young men have worked so hard to earn the respect of these NFL teams,” said Towson Coach Rob Ambrose. “Each one of these student-athletes are great people along with being great players and have well represented Towson University over and over. I fully expect them to continue to do so in the NFL.”

Beltre, a three-time All-CAA player, signed with the San Diego Chargers. Dangerfield, a team captain and second-team All-American, signed with the Buffalo Bills. Sheppard, who caught five touchdowns this year, signed with the Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens.

The players will compete for a roster spot at their team’s respective training camp this summer.

“I think they will have an advantage when they go to NFL camps,” he added. “Coming through our program, they have learned the right way to do things and they know what is expected of them. They have strong character and they will always represent their teams well.”

These players will have a chance to join fellow Towson University graduate Jermon Bushrod ’07 among the NFL ranks. Four other Towson football alumni have played in the NFL: Sean Landeta ’83, Stan Eisentooth ’87, David Meggett ’89 and Tony Vinson ’94.

Stay up to date on the back-to-back CAA Champion Towson football squad as it completes spring practice and moves toward defending its title.
