TU alumnus named chief of Anne Arundel County Police

kevin davisA Towson University graduate is now the chief of the Anne Arundel County Police Department. Kevin Davis ’91 takes command of the department today.

“I’m humbled by the confidence County Executive Laura Neuman has demonstrated in me,” said Davis in a statement released Friday, “and look forward to serving with the men and women of the Anne Arundel County Police Department to protect the citizens of our county.”

Davis graduated from Towson with a degree in English in 1991. Since then he has gained 21 years experience in law enforcement with the Prince George’s County Police Department, where he was assistant chief for the last three years. His service is credited with helping that county reduce its homicide rate to its lowest level since 1986.

Davis will now head up a struggling department in the aftermath of former chief James Teare Sr.’s resignation. Teare left when a state prosecutor widened his investigation into then-county executive John Leopold’s misuse of his police detail. Leopold was eventually convicted of misconduct in office. The department was then headed by former county chief and state police superintendent Larry Tolliver. He stepped down in May after accusations of inappropriate remarks. County officers have been under the direction of Lt. Col. Pam Davis since then.

Kevin Davis’s appointment is one that County Executive Neuman hopes will lend stability now.

“Chief Davis is a proven leader and shares my vision for the future of our police department,” Neuman said in a statement. “I am confident that under his leadership, morale and professionalism will be restored and the Anne Arundel County Police Department will become a model in the state.”

Chief Davis went on from Towson to earn a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy.
