Perkins steps into the position that will be vacated by Kevin Maxwell, who announced his departure on June 27. He is taking a position as CEO of Prince George’s County Public Schools.

Since her graduation from Towson’s College of Education in 1973, Perkins has spent four decades in education. She was a teacher in Baltimore City schools for 13 years, then served as adjunct faculty at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Education.

Before taking the interim superintendent position, she served as chief of staff and deputy superintendent in Howard County’s school system. There, she helped initiate a cultural program to train more than 4,000 employees to serve the system’s diverse student population.

Governor Martin O’Malley appointed Perkins to the Howard Community College Board of Trustees in 2010. She will serve out the remainder of Maxwell’s existing contract, scheduled for one year.
