No. 2 football fends off Stony Brook to remain undefeated

The Tigers’ high-powered offense was held scoreless in the first quarter as turnovers allowed home team Stony Brook to open a 14-0 lead. But the Tigers chipped away in the second, trailing 21-10 at half.

Roles were reversed after the half, as Towson kept Stony Brook out of the end zone while racking up 25 points to win their first conference game of the season. The 35-21 victory moves the football Tigers to 5-0. Terrance West rushed for 154 yards and a touchdown with Darius Victor adding 48 yards and a score.

“At halftime, we were confident that if we played the way we could, we would win this game,” said head coach Rob Ambrose. “This is a team that plays together and they got it done. I couldn’t be more proud of a team.”

Volleyball tops George Washington in 3-1 victory

Towson snapped a five-match losing streak on the road against the GW Colonials Sunday afternoon. Senior Dayane Van Ass and junior Victoria Williams combined for 26 kills in the 3-1 win.

The dominant performance was an impressive rebound from the team’s loss to Delaware on Friday in the CAA opener. The Tigers are back in action this Friday, resuming conference play against Hofstra at SECU Arena.

Soccer opens CAA play with win over Drexel

The Tigers jumped out to a quick two-goal lead, scoring twice in the opening four minutes of their conference opener Sunday afternoon against Drexel. Senior Emily Banes assisted on each early score, one to Katie Ponce and the other to Katlyn Axenfeld.

Ponce later scored again in the second half to extend the lead to the final 3-0 tally. Towson goalkeeper Erin Quinn made six saves, posting the program’s first shutout over Drexel since Oct. 21, 2011.

“Today we were able to get a good start,” said head coach Greg Paynter. “Conference wins are hard to come by; I don’t care who they are against. I will take them.”

Field Hockey falls to Ohio in overtime

Junior Kelly Mattingly scored her first goal of the season, but the score was all the Tigers could muster Saturday afternoon against the Ohio University Bobcats. Tied at the end of regulation, the hosts sank the Tigers’ bid with an unassisted goal in the 78th minute, taking a decisive 2-1 lead.

Towson goalkeeper Brittany Varacallo made a career high 13 saves in the contest. The Tigers return home this weekend for a pair of CAA matchups on Friday and Sunday, facing off against James Madison and William & Mary, respectively.
