After posting a 10-2 regular season record in the regular season, the Towson University football team earned the #7 seed for the NCAA FCS championship playoffs. The Tigers, who are making their second FCS playoff appearance in the past three years, are one of eight seeded teams which earned first-round byes.

Towson will host the winner of the first-round game between Fordham and Sacred Heart at Johnny Unitas Stadium on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 1 p.m.

“When you work hard and when you sacrifice, special things can happen,” said head coach Rob Ambrose. “Every day, the eye was on the prize. Without everybody working together this just doesn’t happen. When I took the job, I said it wasn’t a matter of if, but when. The ability to maintain our level of success over the past couple of years has given Towson national respect. I am proud to be a part of this community. It’s gratifying, I can’t hide it. I’m proud, I really am. The feeling is just plain awesome.”

In his fifth season as the Tigers’ coach, Ambrose has led the Tigers to a 29-28 record. Over the past three years, Towson has posted a 26-9 record, including a 19-5 mark in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) games.

Towson earned its 10th victory overall and sixth in the CAA on Saturday, 28-17, over James Madison. Junior Terrance West scored three touchdowns and ran for 100 yards to support a solid defensive effort, as the Tigers earned their first victory over the Dukes since 1992. The Tigers recorded a 10-win season for the first time since 1983.

One of the leading candidates for the Walter Payton Award as the top player in FCS football, West gained his 100 yards on 22 carries. It was the tenth time in 12 games that he topped the 100-yard mark. West’s three touchdowns increased his season total to 31 TDs, a school record that also leads FCS football. He finished the regular season with 1,865 yards on 299 carries—the top mark in the nation.
