Towson University’s dean of graduate studies has received a distinctive honor from a major national professional organization.

Janet DeLany has been named the American Occupational Therapy Association’s 2014 Outstanding Mentor Award winner. The award recognizes clinicians, educators or researchers in the occupational therapy field who have excelled in mentoring a student, colleague or employee. DeLany is recognized for demonstrating that mentorship in collegial partnerships.

“I am humbled by the honor bestowed upon me by my professional colleagues,” said DeLany. “It gives me pause to reflect upon the importance of taking time to engage in daily exchanges with our colleagues and students.

“Often these exchanges are informal—an extension of a hand, a sharing of a thought to help address a concern. Though not initially intended to be, these exchanges collectively become part of an ongoing mentoring process and uplift ourselves, our colleagues and students, and the professions we represent.”

DeLany, who is a registered, licensed occupational therapist and an association fellow, has made critical contributions to key elements of best practices in occupational therapy, including the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework. She has authored and co-authored articles and papers with significant implications for the profession, such as the AOTA Societal Statements.

The American Occupational Therapy Association is a 50,000-member organization founded in 1917 that works to improve access to health care, assure quality occupational therapy services and promote the professional development of its members. It sets standards and provides resources for occupational therapists and serves as an advocate for health care improvement.
