Football advances in FCS playoffs, women’s basketball tops George Washington

Football takes down Fordham, moves on to face Eastern Illinois

Quarterback Peter Athens threw for 301 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Towson Tigers over the Fordham Rams 48-28, in the second round of the FCS Playoffs. Walter Payton Award finalist Terrance West rushed for three touchdowns to help secure the victory.

The playoff win is the first since Towson moved to Division 1 FCS, 26 years ago. The victory was the 11th of the season, setting a program record. The No. 5 Tigers now go on the road to face No. 2 Eastern Illinois in Charleston, Ill., this Friday. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2.

Men’s basketball falls twice in Texas

The Tigers were up-ended twice over the weekend during their trip to Texas to play Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State as part of the Lumberjack E-Tech Classic. The Tigers lost to Stephen F. Austin Friday, 79-69, and to Sam Houston State Saturday, 67-55.

The team returns home to SECU Arena, where they remain undefeated, to face Central Penn College at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 10.

Women’s basketball edges George Washington

Tanisha McTiller hit a free throw with two seconds to play to give the women’s basketball team a 68-67 win at George Washington on Saturday afternoon. Four Tigers scored in double figures as Towson claimed its first road win of the season.

The Tigers trailed by 10 at half, but charged back in the second, stifling the Colonials offense. George Washington shot only 23.5 percent from the field in the second half during the Tigers’ rally. McTiller led the Tigers with 22 points, shooting 8-16 from the field. She also picked up the team on the defensive end with five steals.
