Men’s basketball wins fifth straight game; Women’s basketball falls in one-point loss

The Towson Tigers upped their winning streak to five on Sunday, beating hosts College of Charleston, 72-57, in a nationally televised game. Senior Jerelle Benimon, named CAA player of the week on Monday, notched 21 points and 11 rebounds for his ninth straight double-double. Three other Tigers—seniors Mike Burwell and Rafriel Guthrie and sophomore Four McGlynn—also scored in double figures.

Earlier in the week, the Tigers knocked off Drexel, 80-68.

The Tigers’ win streak (which includes its first three conference games) is the program’s longest since the 2000-01 season. The Tigers, also riding a 13-game home win streak, return to SECU Arena to face Northeastern Wednesday, Jan. 22. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.

Johnson scores record three-pointers as UNC-Wilmington edges women’s basketball

Sophomore guard Dominique Johnson nailed eight 3-pointers, breaking a school record, but it wasn’t quite enough as UNC-Wilmington hung on just enough to beat the Tigers at SECU Arena, 54-53.

The Tigers shot 44 percent from the field, while the Seahawks shot 41.9 percent. The Tiger women move to 8-9 (2-2 in CAA play).

Earlier in the week, the Tigers lost another close game at home to James Madison, 62-57. The Tiger women’s next game is Thursday night at College of Charleston.
