Gymnastics takes first SECU Arena meet; men’s basketball loses two CAA games

Gymnastics wins in SECU Arena opener

In their home opener and first meet at SECU Arena, the Tigers came away victorious over West Chester, Southern Connecticut and Centenary College Saturday afternoon.

The season-high 191.900 team score was a comeback for the Tigers, who were in third place halfway through the meet, but pulled ahead in the third rotation. Juniors Lauren Ross (38.275) and Samantha Lutz (38.25) placed first and second, respectively, in all-around performances.

The Tigers next travel to face West Virginia, Rutgers and George Washington at West Virginia on Feb. 2.

Jerelle Benimon

Senior Jerelle Benimon notched 29 points in Saturday’s loss at Delaware.

Men’s basketball rally falls short at Delaware

Senior Jerelle Benimon’s 13th double-double wasn’t enough for the Tigers (12-8, 3-2 CAA) to overcome a 15-point halftime deficit at Delaware Saturday as the Blue Hens held on for the win, 83-76.

The Tigers’ 51 second-half points were the team’s most this season against a Division I opponent.

Earlier in the week, a late comeback bid failed as Northeastern’s David Walker drained a 35-foot three-pointer in the closing seconds to down the Tigers, 57-54, for their first CAA loss and first loss at SECU Arena. The Tigers return to SECU Arena Monday to face Hofstra. Comcast SportsNet will carry the game, which tips off at 7 p.m. There will be a special recognition of the FCS national championship finalist football team at halftime, and students are encouraged to wear ’80s clothes and request ’80s songs via Twitter during the game. The songs with the most votes will be played.

Women’s basketball falls in visit to William & Mary

The women couldn’t overtake William & Mary’s nine-three pointers on the way to a road loss, 69-60.

Junior forward LaTorri Hines-Allen posted her second-straight double-double, but the Tribe outperformed Towson from the field, shooting 40.7 percent over the Tigers’ 39.1.

Earlier in the week, the Tigers edged College of Charleston, 64-60. The Tigers next host Delaware at SECU Arena on Feb. 2.

Tigers place third in Bucknell invitational

Towson’s indoor track and field team placed third among nine teams in the Gulden Invitational Saturday at Bucknell.

Sophomore Wilhelmina Austin won the most valuable field performer honors, earning 18 points with her meet-best long jump and second-place triple jump.

The next meet is at Lehigh on Saturday.
