Wild finish for men’s basketball, major meets for swimming and diving deliver more wins

Senior Jerrelle Benimon led the men’s basketball team to wild victory Saturday against Drexel, 75-73. The game featured seven lead changes, with neither team ever leading by more than seven points. Benimon notched 20 of his 25 points after halftime.

The game was tied when sophomore Four McGlynn nailed two free throws with seven seconds left.

The game was part of Autism Awareness Day. Towson and Drexel’s coaches were among more than 100 nationwide who wore blue pins to raise awareness of autism spectrum disorders.

Last Monday, the Tigers routed Hofstra, 76-58. The home stand continues for the Tigers this week as they face James Madison Tuesday night at SECU Arena.

Delaware’s early run dooms Tigers

Delaware jumped to an early 24-7 lead from which the women’s basketball team couldn’t recover as Towson lost at home, 69-44. The Tigers shot just 29.6 percent from the field in the first half, while the Blue Hens shot 59.3 percent.

Senior guard Tanisha McTiller led the Tigers with 18 points and three steals. The Tigers next face a Tuesday trip to Northeastern.

Men’s swimming and diving wins 11th meet

The Tigers head into the CAA championship later this month with 11 wins after a split Saturday against Penn State and Saint Bonaventure. Towson beat Saint Bonaventure, 182-112, but fell to host Penn State, 183-114.

The Tigers’ leaders included Jeremy Liu, who won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:03.66 and placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 57.17. The men move on to the championship, which starts Feb. 26 in College Park.

Women’s swimming and diving notches 13th victory

Like the men, the women’s swimming and diving team also left State College with a split, losing to the Nittany Lions, 166-133, but besting Saint Bonaventure, 266-33.

Senior Kaitlin Burke led the Tigers by winning the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.11 and the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:03.64. Sophomore Charlotte Holz won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:04.86 and took home second in the 200-yard backstroke, posting 2:04.07.The Tigers next prepare for the CAA championship, which starts Feb. 26 in College Park.

Rampolla sets record in non-scoring meet

In a non-scoring meet at Lehigh University on Saturday, sophomore Maggie Rampolla broke a school record for the pole vault. Her 12′ 6.00″ mark shattered the 11′ 10.00″ record set by Jodie Taetle in 2005. Senior Leslie Miles won the 500-meter run in 1:18.82. Fellow senior Evan Campbell placed second in the high jump with a leap of 5′ 3.00″. The Tigers’ next event is Feb. 14 at the Lafayette/Rider Invitational.
