DeNapoli scores four as men’s lacrosse opens season with win
The Tigers started strong, putting away High Point at home Saturday, 11-8.
Senior Thomas DeNapoli notched four points with an assist. Freshman Joe Seider claimed three goals and an assist to celebrate his 19th birthday on the field. The Tigers trailed, 5-4, at the half, but in the second, Towson scored five unanswered goals.
The Tigers next travel just down Charles Street to face Johns Hopkins Saturday. The 4 p.m. game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
Men’s basketball wins in overtime
Towson came back from a halftime deficit to beat College of Charleston in overtime, 68-61. The Tigers (16-8, 7-2) maintained their second place in the CAA standings and have won nine of their past 11.
Senior Jerrelle Benimon was again a big factor in the Tigers’ win, scoring seven of his game-high 20 points in overtime. Benimon was 5-for-10 from the floor and went 10-for-17 from the free throw line. Senior Mike Burwell nailed a jumper with 20 seconds to go in regulation to knot the game at 53 and send it to overtime.
Earlier in the week, the Tigers beat James Madison, 80-71. The Tigers look to extend their four-game win streak Monday as they head to UNC-Wilmington. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
Women’s basketball can’t overcome James Madison’s hot start
Senior guard Tanisha McTiller’s 19 points weren’t enough to overcome an early 21-0 James Madison lead en route to the Dukes’ win over the visiting Tigers, 82-40.
Towson (11-12, 5-5 CAA) shot 28.6 percent from the floor to JMU’s 40.3 percent. Junior forward LaTorri Hines-Allen added 11 points. The Tigers were back 47-11 at the half and started the second half strong, but never caught up.
Earlier in the week, the Tigers edged Hofstra at home, 65-63. They return to SECU Arena Thursday to face Drexel. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
Softball splits Upstate USC Classic
The Tigers broke a 2009 record for runs in a single game with an 18-6 victory over North Carolina Central but fell 7-1 in the final game against hosts USC Upstate to split the USC Upstate Classic.
Junior Missy McCormick accounted for six RBI in the North Carolina Central game, including a three-run homer. USC Upstate pitcher Lexi Schubert, however, held the offense to just four hits and one run (off a Maureen Hepner solo home run) in the tournament’s final game.The Tigers next travel Friday to the three-day Kickin’ Chicken Classic at Coastal Carolina. The tournament begins with a 4:30 p.m. game against Coastal Carolina, followed by a 6:30 p.m. game against La Salle.
