Men’s lacrosse stems slide with Georgetown win

Midfielder Greg Cuccinello scored twice in Towson’s win over Georgetown.

Men’s lacrosse cancelled a two game slide with its second win in a row, edging Georgetown Saturday at Unitas Stadium, 8-7.

Co-captains Thomas DeNapoli and Greg Cuccinello each scored two goals, with DeNapoli adding four assists. Cuccinello’s shot with six seconds left tied the game at 4 at the half. The Tigers shut out Georgetown in the third quarter on the way to the win.

Earlier in the week, the Tigers lost at Loyola, 20-4. The team next hosts Mount St. Mary’s for a Saturday game.

Women’s lacrosse opens season with pair of wins

The Tigers women’s lacrosse team beat Georgetown Saturday, 14-10, for an upset win and their second in as many games. The visiting Hoyas were the highest-ranked opponent the Tigers have beaten since No. 9 James Madison in 2011.

The Tigers went on a 6-0 run to start the game, including a hat trick from red-shirt junior attacker Andi Raymond. Raymond added a fourth goal and three assists. Junior Kelsea Donnelly had a career-high 14 saves in goal for the Tigers.

The team is back in action Sunday at No. 2 Syracuse for a 1 p.m. game.

Burwell and Guthrie come up big in second half

Seniors Mike Burwell and Rafriel Guthrie were the difference-makers late in Towson’s Saturday win at Hofstra, 83-77. It was the program’s 20th win, a mark not reached since the 21-win 1993-94 season.

The pair combined for 23 points in the last 16:32. Senior Jerrelle Benimon put up 22 points (7-for-10 from the floor) despite playing a season-low 26 minutes. He sat for nearly 10 minutes after he was charged with his fourth foul early in the second half.

Earlier in the week, the Tigers beat Northeastern, 79-70, and CAA-leading Delaware, 78-63.

Towson travels Wednesday to James Madison before wrapping their season at home Saturday against William & Mary. Delaware’s loss to Drexel this weekend means the Tigers still have a shot at the CAA regular-season title and the top seed in March’s CAA tournament at the Baltimore Arena.

Women’s tennis wins fifth

The women’s tennis team shut out Maryland Eastern Shore, 7-0, and Salisbury, 9-0, at Salisbury for their fourth and fifth wins Sunday afternoon.

Nisha Shah and Cailey Easdale each won two singles matches in straight sets. Nani Lizana and Belen Lizana also won two singles matches apiece.

The Tigers travel next to Navy to face the Mids next Sunday at 11 a.m.

Late free throws doom Tigers women’s basketball

UNC Wilmington edged out the women’s basketball team, 60-59.

In a game with eight ties and nine lead changes, Towson came up short on chances to retake the lead at the foul line. With seven seconds left, a UNCW three-pointer trimmed Towson’s 59-55 lead to one point. With a chance at two on a one-and-one, a Tiger turnover led to a foul, sending UNCW’s Kelva Atkins to the line for two buckets.

Earlier in the week, the Tigers beat visiting William & Mary, 75-69. The next game is at home against College of Charleston Sunday at 2 p.m.

Softball splits Longwood Spring Classic

The Tigers softball team won two games of the Longwood Spring Classic this weekend, taking a game each against Lafayette and the host team.

The women won Sunday’s game against Lafayette, 6-2, and shut out Longwood, 1-0. Pitcher Missy McCormick tossed a complete game against Lafayette. The Tigers’ scoring started fast with an RBI base hit off the bat of Delanie Dunham.

In the Longwood game, sophomore Ambar Hickman pitched a shutout for her team-best fourth win. Both sides were scoreless until the eighth, when Towson knocked in a game-winning RBI single.

The Tigers host Rhode Island, Manhattan and Delaware State next weekend in the Tiger Invitational. The first game is set for Friday at 3 p.m. against Rhode Island.

Baseball drops series at Cal State Bakersfield

The Tigers baseball team suffered its first two losses this weekend in a series at Cal State Bakersfield, dropping games Friday, 5-4, and Saturday, 8-1. The Tigers won Sunday’s finale, 3-2.

Starter Nick Cloffi gave up three hits and two walks with two runs, both unearned. The Tigers scored in the eighth, but CSU Bakersfield tacked on three more.

Sunday’s game was relief pitcher Brandon Gonnella’s first win as he threw for just more than three innings with no score, including a perfect ninth to seal the victory.

The Tigers travel next weekend to face Campbell University and West Point at the Campbell Invitational in Buies Creek, NC. First pitch is Friday afternoon against West Point.

Third-place finish for Tigers in Pink Meet

Injuries again hampered the Tigers gymnastics team as they placed third in the Pink Meet Saturday against William & Mary and New Hampshire.

Senior Alexa Davis accounted for 9.825 of the team’s 48.575 floor exercise score, but the Tigers only competed with five gymnasts on vault, bars and beam. The meet was Davis’ first time in floor exercise this year.

Towson’s 48.250 bars score was led by junior Samantha Lutz, who finished third with 9.775.

The Tigers have a rematch against second-place finishers William & May orn Friday at a meet hosted by North Carolina.

Bucaro wins run in invitational

Kara Bucaro won the 1,000-meter run by a more than three-second margin in the non-scoring Princeton Invitational Sunday.

The junior clocked 3:01.05. Teammate Leslie Miles placed third in the 500-meter run with 1:17.58, followed by freshman Sarah Robbie with 1:17.95.

The Tigers’ next meet is 11 a.m. next Saturday at George Mason.
