Tigers lose heart-breaker downtown in CAA tournament

The Tigers men’s basketball team’s historic season came to an end Sunday in the CAA semifinals as No. 3 seed William & Mary upset the No. 2 seed Tigers, 73-71.

The loss, in front of a mostly pro-Towson crowd at the Baltimore Arena, was sealed in the final seconds. After an out-of-bounds call was reversed upon the review, Tigers senior forward Jerrelle Benimon was stripped by all five Tribe players and the ball bounced out of bounds.

In postgame comments, head coach Pat Skerry said he believes the Tigers will be invited to another postseason tournament, such as the NIT or CBI.

Benimon scored 18 points, while senior Mike Burwell added 17 and senior Rafriel Guthrie tacked on 13. Tribe guard Marcus Thornton scored 21. The Tigers never led in the second half. In the Tigers’ quarterfinal win, 80-71, over James Madison, sophomore guard Four McGlynn scored 21 points and scored 4-of-5 from beyond the arc.

Baseball sweeps tournament at Navy

The Tigers baseball team swept all three games at the Naval Academy Tournament this weekend. The team topped Monmouth, 3-0; Pennsylvania, 4-2; and Navy, 3-2. The team’s 9-3 start to the season is its best since 2001.

The Monmouth win was led by junior pitcher Chris Acker, who tossed seven shutout innings. In the Navy game, Towson pulled ahead early on a run driven in by a force play on Kurt Wertz. Senior Kyle Paul threw four scoreless frames in relief.

The Tigers travel next weekend for a three-game series at the University of Houston.

Women’s basketball falls in season finale

Drexel’s 17-9 opening run set the tone for the Towson’s women’s season finale loss on the road Wednesday, 82-40.

Senior guard Tanisha McTiller led the Tigers offense with 19 points and four rebounds. LaTorri Hines-Allen scored her team-best 11th double-double. Towson shot just 28.8 percent from the floor (to the Dragons’ 64.7) but out-rebounded Drexel, 28-25.

The sixth-seeded Tigers face No. 3 College of Charleston on Mar. 14 in the CAA championship at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro.

First quarter goals lead men’s lacrosse over Marist

After Marist scored just 15 seconds into their Friday match against visiting Towson, the Tigers men’s lacrosse responded with five first quarter goals on the road to the win, 12-9.

Freshman Joe Seider and sophomore Chris Vetter each notched a hat trick in the win, Towson’s fourth. Marist came back with two goals to open the second, but the Tigers kept them off the board for nearly the next 15 minutes as they opened up an 11-4 lead, more than enough for the win.

Women’s lacrosse drops to Stanford in overtime

A Towson foul led to a free position goal for Stanford as the Tigers lost in overtime, 8-7, at Unitas Stadium Friday.

Stanford jumped to a 2-0 lead early, but Towson responded with three goals. Stanford responded with three more, and led going into the half. Towson stormed out of the locker room with two goals by junior attacker Andi Raymond to give the Tigers a one-goal lead. The game would stay tight and was sent into overtime when Stanford’s Alex Poplawski scored with 3:51 left in regulation.

The Tigers next travel to Loyola Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game.

Howard routs Tigers tennis

Freshman Sophie Lesage earned her team-best 10th singles win, but it was one of only a few bright spots for the Tigers as they fell to Howard, 6-1, Tuesday.

Lesage, moved up to fourth in the Tigers lineup, beat Howard’s Jessica Josiah 6-4, 6-2 to earn Towson’s only point in the meet.

A scheduled Thursday match against UMBC was postponed. The Tigers next hit the court Tuesday for a 2 p.m. match at George Washington.
