Sushi

Sushi will be just one of the many cultural offerings to be had at Sunday’s Japan Festival.

The Asian Arts and Culture Center of Towson University and the Baltimore Kawasaki Sister Committee will host a Japan Festival on Sunday, April 13, 1-5 p.m. in the Center for the Arts.

The family-friendly event will celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Baltimore-Kawasaki Sister City Partnership, and feature Japanese food, music, art and dance, traditional crafts and games, a tea ceremony and martial arts demonstrations.

The Sister Cities program was established to create a force for international cooperation and understanding through community involvement and people-to-people relationships. Baltimore currently has 10 sister cities, including the multicultural city of Kawasaki, located in the greater Tokyo metro area.

Specific festival highlights include a photo booth with traditional Japanese costumes; martial arts demonstrations by the Japan Karate and Judo Center and Maryland Kendo Club; calligraphy by Yaeko Steir; a tea ceremony presentation by the Chado Urasenke Tankokai Washington D.C. Association; flower arranging with Reiko Royston; music performances by pianist Yoshie Kubota, violinists Naoko Takebe, Noelle Midori Naito and Kenneth Ryu Naito, and singers Kuniko Kanawa and Yoko Sasaki; and a dance performance by Kuniko Kanawa.

Matcha Time Café and Roy’s will provide food for the festival.

All patrons must have a ticket/festival badge, which can be purchased online. Advance tickets are $5 for AA&CC members, BKSCC members, TU students and children 12 and under, and $10 for the general public. All tickets on the day of the festival are $15.
