“Building Our Community” aims to strengthen university engagement, highlight student volunteers

As part of Towson University’s ongoing effort to strengthen its relationship with the external community, the Student Government Association and Office of Student Activities will host a “Building Our Community” dinner on Thursday, April 17 from 5-7 p.m. in the Minnegan Room at Johnny Unitas Stadium.

Big Event

The “Big Event” is just one example of the many student-led community initiatives held every year.

“The goal of this dinner is to highlight our student leaders, share ways to enhance community engagement, and strengthen the ‘town and gown’ relationship between the university and surrounding neighborhoods,” said Deb Moriarty, vice president of student affairs.

“This is a great opportunity for our students and community members to be inspired, get involved and learn about more ways to make a difference in our neighborhoods, our city and our state.”

Maryland Senator James Brochin and Anne Angel, vice president of the Continental Realty Corporation, will serve as the keynote speakers of the dinner, which will recognize the many student-led programs, projects and initiatives held throughout the year to support communities near campus.

“In an effort to bring to light the positive impact our students have been making in the community,” Moriarty added, “we will be revealing a video highlighting the perspectives of some of TU’s most involved, driven students, as well as the civic engagement vision of our president, Dr. Maravene Loeschke.”

The dinner is free and open to the public, but space is limited so guests are encouraged to register online.

Building Our Community precedes the “Big Event,” Towson’s largest day of community service where students serve homeowners and nonprofit agencies in the greater Towson community by shoveling, raking, painting, gardening and more. Students can still sign up to volunteer for the Big Event, to be held Saturday, April 26 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“Last year we had over 800 students participate and this year, on our fifth anniversary, we hope to make it even bigger,” said Ceanne West, one of several students planning the event. “We are hoping to have close to 1,000 students participate.”
