Penn State-York Chancellor and Professor of Nursing Lisa Plowfield will join Towson University as dean of the College of Health Professions this July.

University Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Timothy Chandler made the announcement today. Plowfield will take the position left by Charlotte Exner, who will move full time to head up the college-partnered Institute for Well-Being.

Plowfield received a B.S. in nursing from Thomas Jefferson University in 1986 and an M.S. in trauma and critical care nursing from the University of Maryland-Baltimore in 1988. She worked as a medical-surgical nurse and as a trauma nurse in Lancaster, Pa., before earning her Ph.D. in nursing from the University of Virginia in 1993.

After her doctorate, Plowfield served as a professor at the University of Delaware. She became the director of the university’s nursing center, one of 13 founding centers of the National Nursing Center Consortium, for which she served on the board of directors. She was later named the director of UD’s School of Nursing. Her work at UD led to multiple funding awards from the UNIDEL Foundation and the U.S. Public Health Service, among others. She garnered an award for excellence in undergraduate teaching in 1995.

In 2007, Plowfield joined Florida State University as dean of its College of Nursing, where she established the university’s first doctoral program in nursing. She moved on to Penn State-York in 2011, where she served as chancellor until 2012 and continued as a professor of nursing until her appointment at Towson.

Plowfield will assume her duties as dean of the College of Health Professions on July 21.
