Athletics Weekend Round Up: TU Tennis starts season strong

In addition to the football team’s win over Delaware State on Saturday, Tiger Athletics had a weekend full of victories.

The Tigers’ women’s tennis team began its season this weekend by hosting the annual Tiger Classic at the Towson Center Tennis Complex.

The Tigers served up the tournament with a 5-1 win over Mount St. Mary’s, taking all four singles matches and one doubles match. This was followed by a 4-1 victory over Loyola, with three wins in singles play and another in doubles.

In its one match on Saturday, Towson fell 3-2 to UMBC after winning just two singles matches. Sunday featured Towson defeating St. Joseph’s 3-2, splitting a doubles-only round with George Washington and losing 4-1 against Delaware.

Freshmen Lucy Williams and A.J. Gomer led the way for the Tigers, each picking up four wins between singles and doubles competition. Towson is back in action this weekend, competing in a tournament at Navy.

The Tiger Classic tournament does not count toward the team’s overall record.

Volleyball goes 3-1 in Alabama

Volleyball continued its hot start, going 3-1 during the ISTAP Collegiate Cup tournament at Alabama State.

Towson picked up wins against The Citadel (3-0), Savannah State (3-0) and Southern Miss (3-0). The Tigers fell in the last game of the tournament against Alabama (3-0) to pick up the first loss of the season.

The Tigers will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Delaware State at SECU Arena.

Field hockey scores upset win

Field hockey notched its first win of the season, 4-3 over No. 18 American on Saturday night in a neutral site game at College Park, Maryland.

Towson scored four goals in the final seven minutes for the comeback victory. Senior Courtney Branco paced the Tigers, knocking in two. Senior Kelly Mattingly and junior Stacey Mackintosh contributed to the tally.

The Tigers suffered a 2-1 loss against Lehigh on Sunday. Field hockey returns to action on Sept. 21 in the first home game of the season, taking on Rider at Johnny Unitas Stadium™.

  • Soccer had an up-and-down weekend, starting with a 1-0 loss at Loyola on Friday. The Tigers rebounded on Sunday at home with a 2-0 victory over UMBC.
  • Former Towson running back Terrance West helped lead the Browns to their first win of the season. West scored his first career touchdown in the Browns’ 26-24 win over the Saints. West’s 168 yards are tied for fourth best in the NFL.
  • A couple of Towson football players earned CAA weekly honors. Senior Derrick Joseph was named Special Teams Player of the Week. Freshman James Simms earned Rookie of the Week.
