The garbage man

Bread & Cheese Creek
John Long ‘92/’94 isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty.

Since 2009 he’s led a group of volunteers on a garbage patrol, clearing more than 70 tons of trash from streams in southeastern Baltimore County.

His nonprofit, Clean Bread and Cheese Creek, has scheduled its spring cleanups. And Long is eager for help once again from Towson students.

“Volunteers truly are the heart of our organization,” he says. “I can’t begin to tell you how happy we are with the response we get from Towson University students.

Long welcomes everyone, not just students, and has jobs to suit every ability, whether it’s hauling shopping carts from streams, helping with registration or delivering water and snacks. “The more people we have, the easier the work will be for everyone,” he says. He encourages volunteers to bring their own tools but provides them with snacks and gloves. Many of the events also include lunch.

Cleanups are run in conjunction with the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay’s Annual Project Clean Stream Event, National Public Lands Day, American Rivers and Trash-Free Maryland. Students can earn community service and service learning hours.

Many of the locations earmarked for trash removal are steeped in history. The Peninsula Expressway, for example, washes into Bear Creek where the British landed to launch their attack on Baltimore during the War of 1812.

Cleanups are scheduled for:
