Three Towson University students took home a 2014 Mark of Excellence Award in Region 2 from the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ). The award honors the best in student journalism.

Sydney Adamson, Abby Murphy and Sarah Hugel won the photo illustration award for “Towson’s most eligible,” the cover of The Towerlight newspaper, on Feb. 10, 2014. The illustration placed first among large universities—those with 10,000 or more students.

DamasCover“It was great to get recognition for ‘Towson’s most eligible,’ which is something uniquely ours,” says Murphy, who was photo editor during the issue’s publication. “[That cover] is always difficult to plan, so it was such a cooperative effort between our graphic design department and photography department.”

Murphy was also a finalist for the illustration, “Mr. 1,000,” a Feb. 20, 2014 Towerlight cover highlighting senior basketball player Marcus Damas (right).

Award certificates were presented the weekend of March 28 at a conference in College Park, Maryland for Region 2, which comprises Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia and Washington, D.C. First-place winners will move on to the national competition, facing category winners from all 12 regions.
