The Towson University men’s basketball team accepted a bid Sunday night to play in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT), marking the Tigers’ first postseason appearance since 1991. Towson will play the University of South Carolina Upstate this Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. at the Hodge Center in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
USC Upstate will bring an overall record of 19-14 into Wednesday’s contest with the Tigers. The Spartans, who defeated Virginia Tech of the ACC and South Carolina of the SEC in the regular season, finished with an 11-7 record in conference play and reached the semi-finals of the A-Sun tournament before falling to eventual champion Mercer.
Towson, with an overall record of 23-10, finished in second place in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) during the regular season with a 13-3 mark. The Tigers defeated James Madison in the CAA tournament quarter-finals but fell to William & Mary the following night, 75-71, at the Baltimore Arena.
Towson accepted the CIT bid Sunday night immediately after the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) 32-team field was announced.
“We’re extremely excited to play in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament,” said Towson head coach Pat Skerry. “To keep our program moving forward, it’s vital to play in the postseason. With our highest RPI ever and a school-record 23 wins, our kids deserved to keep playing.”
