The Towson University volleyball team completed a clean sweep at this weekend’s Towson Invitational, winning all three games at SECU Arena. Towson has now improved its season record to a perfect 6-0.
“It was definitely a winnable tournament coming in,” said head coach Don Metil. “We got a lot of our young kids to get some experience. Last year we had a tough schedule early, so it’s great to have some success early with two tough weekends ahead.”
Towson started the tournament on Friday with a 3-0 win over St. Peters. They followed that on Saturday with wins over Coppin State (3-1) and La Salle (3-0). The six-game win streak is Towson’s best start of the season since 2010 when the Tigers went 10-0.
Senior outside hitter Saitaua Iosia was named the tournament’s most valuable player, finishing the tournament with a combined 43 kills, 36 digs and eight serving aces. She was also named the CAA Conference Player of the Week.
Towson volleyball will be back in action next weekend, competing in the Alabama State Tournament. This will include match ups against The Citadel, Savannah State, Southern Mississippi and Alabama.
Men’s Golf Finish Fourth
The Towson’s men golf team finished fourth at the 2014 Navy Fall Classic. Towson had two individuals finish in the Top 10, with John Hulede finishing sixth and Sam Stewart tied for seventh.
“We did not finish quite as well as we had hoped as a team; however, there were several bright spots that we can build on,” said head coach Brian Yaniger. “The guys played a great first nine holes today to get back into position to compete for the title. Then we gave back a few on our second nine and that proved to be the difference.”
The Tigers return to action on Thursday when they travel to Kiawah Island, S.C., to compete in The Invitational at The Ocean Course.
Towson in the NFL
A couple of former Towson University football players had good opening games in the pros.
Chicago Bears starting left tackle Jermon Bushrod continued his consecutive games started streak, stepping to the line in his 71st straight game. He and the Bears fell to the Buffalo Bills 23-20, but the offensive line allowed just one sack.
Towson’s all-time leading rusher Terrance West had a great first game with the Cleveland Browns, exploding off the line for 100 yards rushing against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
