Towson University student-athletes participated in several community service events this past week.
On Sunday, the Towson volleyball team volunteered at the “Run Wild for Autism” event at the Maryland Zoo. The team helped lead runners around the course and cheered them on when they crossed the finish line.
The event featured a 5k race and a 1k family fun walk to benefit the Pathfinders for Autism organization. Pathfinders is Maryland’s largest autism organization dedicated to helping families find resources, support and training, as well as increasing autism spectrum awareness and advocating for those affected by autism.
The athletic department also participated in the Colonial Athletic Association “Have a Heart” Blood Drive for the 13th year. The Tigers donated 146 units of blood, well past the goal of 110 units.
In addition, 91 student-athletes volunteered to help with registration, the canteen and recruiting donors on campus.
Field Hockey picks up second win of the season
The Towson University field hockey team earned its second win of the season on Friday, by taking a 3-2 win at Longwood University.
After a scoreless first half, Towson landed on top with a Kelly Mattingly goal. Towson led the rest of the game, with senior Courtney Branco and freshman Meg Stuart adding goals for the Tigers.
After the win on Friday, Towson returned to action on Sunday with a 2-0 loss against La Salle at Unitas Stadium. Senior goalkeeper Megan Boyle recorded nine saves.
The Tigers return to action on Oct. 3 as they travel to William & Mary.
Benimon starts at Nuggets training camp
On Tuesday, former Towson men’s basketball star Jerrelle Benimon will participate in his first NBA training camp with the Denver Nuggets.
Benimon will compete with 17 others for a spot on the Nuggets’ 15-man roster. The former Tiger earned a berth at camp after an impressive showing on the Nuggets’ summer league team.
Benimon is a two-time Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year and an honorable mention on the Associated Press’ All-American team.
In his two seasons after transferring to Towson from Georgetown, Benimon led the Tigers to a 43-24 record, including a program-high 25 wins in his senior season.
If Benimon makes the roster, he will be the third Tiger to play in the NBA and the third player from a CAA team to be on an NBA roster.
