Towson University has broken ground on two new residential facilities that will add 700 student beds to campus when they open in summer 2016.
The buildings comprise phases 3 and 4 of the West Village Housing project. Combined, they will contain 325,500 gross square feet of apartment-style accommodations for upper level students. The phases are being constructed simultaneously to address the continued demand for on-campus housing and achieve economies of scale in the construction process.
“We are excited to offer our upper level students more on-campus housing options,” said Jerry Dieringer, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs. “These new buildings will be conveniently located and will offer the same amenities as many off-campus apartments. The project will increase the total percentage of undergraduate students staying on-campus and help ease some of the demand for off-campus housing.”
The nine- and 11-story residence halls will contain apartments with a mix of two-and four-bedrooms. Each bedroom is single-occupancy, with shared bathrooms, a kitchen and a living room. Each floor will have communal lounges as well as meeting rooms for studying. They will be located on Emerson Drive west of the university’s Towson Run Apartments and Douglass House in the burgeoning West Village area of campus, which already contains six residence halls with more than 2,100 student beds; a Commons facility with dining areas, student service space and meeting rooms; and a 1,500-space parking garage.
The project is being constructed with $85 million in auxiliary bonds. Like all new buildings on TU’s campus, the two new residence facilities will be built in adherence with sustainable design and construction standards and are expected to achieve LEED Silver certification.
