Towson’s men’s basketball team will play its 2014 home opener against Goucher tonight (Wednesday) at 7 p.m. at SECU Arena. Although the two campuses are located just 1.2 miles away from each other, the Tigers and Gophers are playing for the first time on the hardwood.
Towson is 27-8 in home openers dating back to the 1958-59 season. Tigers head coach Pat Skerry is 1-2 in home openers at Towson. The 2014-15 campaign will be Towson’s second season playing in SECU Arena. Last year, Towson opened the building with a 72-45 victory over Navy.
The Tigers are currently 4-1 this season and off to their best start since 1989-90. A victory tonight will equal the best start since Towson joined Division I in 1979.
Meantime, the women’s basketball team went 5-for-8 from the foul line in the final minute to hold off a late charge by UMBC and claim a 59-54 win Tuesday night. Towson cead coach Niki Reid Geckeler recorded her 100th career coaching victory with the win.
“We made it interesting at the end, we’re figuring out how to win and any type of win you can get on the road this time of year, your happy about,” said coach Reid Geckeler. “LaTorri Hines-Allen was amazing. She’s one of the top players in our conference and she’s playing well right now. Ciara Webb was a catalyst tonight, she hustles and gives you 50-50 plays and that’s important. At the end we told the kids to stay true to our philosophy, get a stop and a rebound.”
Hines-Allen turned in a dominant performance for her third straight double-double. She had 18 points and a career-high 18 rebounds while also contributing two assists, two blocks and a steal. Webb posted 10 points and six rebounds while senior guard Markell Smith finished with nine points and nine rebounds. Freshman guard Breonn Hughey had seven points and dished out seven assists.
The Towson women are back in action this Friday, Nov. 28, for the opening day of the LIU Brooklyn Tournament. The Tigers face Rhode Island at 4:30 p.m. that day in Brooklyn, N.Y.
