Towson University alumnus Aaron Steven ‘09 finished second in a screenwriting contest held by Screencraft.org, making in-roads in an industry that is notoriously difficult.
Steven’s script for “The Narrows” finished second in the action and thriller category of the site’s annual screenwriting contest. The story is set during World War II and based on a real American soldier who is recruited into Lucky Luciano’s crime family and takes part in Operation Underworld, a covert alliance between US Naval Intelligence and the mafia to protect the New York harbor from a Nazi invasion.
Steven recently finished a sci-fi adventure film he is showing selectively. He is developing several other ideas as well.
“The contest result has put me in a great position by taking the legwork out of getting read,” Steven noted. “Now it’s really up to me to deliver on my next set of ideas, so every decision is crucial.”
The budding screenwriter has fond memories of his time at Towson.
“I found a great mentor there in the brilliant Michael Angelella,” Steven said. “I wrote my first feature script in his class, and his guidance and mentorship is what really gave me the confidence to keep going. I went in to his class wanting to write, and I came out feeling like a writer.”
