Towson University will host prominent anti-racist writer and educator Tim Wise and “Baltimore and Beyond: Race, Racism and White Privilege” on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
Wise was named as one of the “25 Visionaries Who are Changing Your World,” by Utne Reader. He has spoken in all 50 states on over 800 college and high school campuses and to community groups across the nation and internationally.
Wise will discuss the global narrative around privilege as well as issues of comparative racism, race and education in the context of Baltimore before opening the floor to questions and discussion.
He has provided anti-racism training to teachers nationwide and has worked with medical, corporate, government, entertainment, military and law enforcement officials on methods for dismantling racism in their institutions.
He has also authored six books and been featured in several documentaries on the issue of race in our society. Wise is a regular contributor on CNN and has been interviewed on hundreds of radio and television programs, including the ABC news program “20/20.”
The event is part of TU’s Diversity Speaker Series, presented by the Center for Student Diversity (CSD). Each semester, the CSD brings culturally relevant speakers, educators, activists and entertainers to campus. According to Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs for Diversity, Santiago Solis, Ph.D., “the purpose of this speaker series is to give students access to some of the world’s most influential minds.”
