The Towson University GEO Careers (Towson University Geoscience Educational Opportunities for Careers) program received a $348,182 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to help meet the growing need for geoscientists in the workforce.
TU is one of only two University System of Maryland (USM) institutions to offer a geology degree.
The NSF predicts a approximate shortage of 135,000 geoscientists in the US by the year 2022. The grant TU GEO Careers earned is aimed at meeting this need by:
- partnerships with regional high schools and community colleges
- introductory geoscience classes by increased use of hands-on, active learning practices
- improved publicity about geoscience career opportunities, including teaching at the K-12 level.
The grant will also assist TU in improving retention of geoscience majors presently enrolled.
