Interim President Chandler issues statement regarding Baltimore unrest

Towson University Interim President Timothy J. L. Chandler issued the following statement today to faculty, staff and students about the unrest in Baltimore. The university also reminds those individuals that emergency message system subscriptions must be renewed annually; you can renew yours on the emergency alert page.

_______________

This is a difficult time for everyone in the greater Baltimore area and we want to reassert that safety is our top priority. Campus leadership and the Towson University Police Department are in direct and ongoing conversations with local law enforcement agencies, as well as our neighboring colleges and universities. We continue to monitor the situation and weigh our options on how to proceed with our day-to-day operations.

We know rumors are circulating, but there is no reliable information of any credible threat to our campus or surrounding area at this time. As necessary, we will share timely information through the appropriate channels already in place including emails, texts, social media, and home page. If you haven’t already, please take a moment to sign up for our emergency text message service.

Towson University is an anchor in the Baltimore region. When Baltimore hurts, Towson University hurts. This past week’s events only strengthen our resolve to continue to develop and foster partnerships that support a strong Baltimore and region.

The events taking place in Baltimore provide an opportunity to have significant and thoughtful dialogue to educate and inform all of us. There is no better place than a university for these conversations to happen. This is where our academic mission and civic engagement experience can be galvanized to make a difference. We welcome this as an essential and important part of our role as an educational institution.

If there are any cancellations of classes or events, you will be notified by an all-campus message posted on our home page and our social media channels. It is an understatement to say that this can be a stressful and challenging time for all of us. If you feel that you need additional support, the Towson University Counseling Center is available to you.

We encourage everyone to be mindful of your personal safety and your surroundings.

Thank you for your continued support.

Timothy J. L. Chandler
