Behind a combined 34 points and 21 rebounds from seniors LaTorri Hines-Allen and Ciara Webb, the Towson University women’s basketball team earned a 56-49 win over the University of Delaware Friday night in a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) clash at SECU Arena. The Tigers, now 6-9 overall and 2-1 in the CAA, won their second straight game while recording their first win over the Blue Hens since the 2009-10 season.
Tied with Delaware 26-26 at halftime, Towson surrendered the opening bucket of the second half before going on an 11-0 run to take a 37-28 lead with 13:48 to play in the game. After a jump shot from Hines-Allen at 10:58 put the Tigers ahead 41-32, a 12-6 run by the visitors allowed Delaware to cut the Towson lead to three, 47-44 with 4:57 remaining.
A pair of free throws from Hines-Allen and a lay-up from freshman guard Markeema Crawford pushed the Towson lead back to seven, 51-44 with 3:49 to go. Delaware scored five of the next seven points to close within 53-49, but the Tigers went 3-for-4 from the foul line in the final minute to seal the victory.
Hines-Allen finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds for her third straight double-double and eighth of the season. She also contributed three assists, five blocks and two steals. Webb had 14 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Junior guard Dominique Johnson posted nine points and a team-high five assists. Crawford came off the bench to post six points.
Towson will wrap up its three-game SECU Arena homestand this Sunday, Jan. 11, when it hosts Hofstra at 2 p.m.
Meanwhile, the men’s basketball team will take over SECU Arena on Saturday, Jan. 10, hosting CAA rival Northeastern at 2 p.m. Fans are encouraged to come out to cheer on the Tigers prior to the Ravens’ AFC playoff game game at New England.
