1,100 Backpacks event returns to TU campus on Wednesday

SSP2Suicide is a very real issue on college campuses and is often a pretty scary topic to talk about. Sometimes it takes a different approach to bring it up, which is why you will see hundreds of backpacks around campus on Wednesday.

Eleven hundred, to be specific.

Active Minds at Towson University and the Counseling Center are co-sponsoring the “1,100 Backpacks/Reasons to Live” event, at The Beach from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6.

Suicide claims the lives of more than 1,100 college students each year. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness about the incidence and impact of suicide, to help connect students to mental health resources, and to inspire action for suicide prevention.

This display also works on “putting a face” to lives lost to suicide and carries the message that preventing suicide is about saving the lives of daughters, sons, brothers, sisters and friends across the nation.

Along with “1,100 Backpacks,” the Counseling Center asked students to tweet their “Reasons To Live” with the hashtag #reasonsTU. Those responses will be displayed by the Counseling Center next to the “1,100 Backpacks” display.
